I never really spent much time on a scale or anywhere near a gym. When I left high school (10 years ago) I weighed around 175 pounds. Like most men, I spent a good deal of time telling my friends that one day I’d be back to that weight.
Unfortunately, since I never really hopped on a scale, I didn’t realize just how far away from my “fighting weight” I’d slipped. So imagine my surprise when the doctor tells me that at 27 years old I was about to be considered “pre-diabetic!”
Somehow over the course of completing college and getting married, I’d put on a whopping 50 pounds and was very close to permanently damaging my health.
Still not one to want to work out, I decided to change my diet and try to be a bit healthier in general. My wife and I cut out soft drinks, started eating whole grain everything, etc, etc. Surprisingly, just those baby steps helped me knock off 20 or so pounds by not even trying.
At the beginning of 2009, however, my wife became pregnant with our very first child. At this point I determined to finally do something about my health. A friend of mine told me to check out Men’s Health, so after reading up on my workout options, I started the Summer Belly Off Challenge in July. By the time my son was born in November, I had dropped another 25 pounds and reached my goal of 175 pounds.
